characters not supported in descriptions.

i'm using characters like å, Å, ∫, ı, ç, Ç, ∂, Î, etc. in my image descriptions and they're not showing up. i can write them in HTML, and they don't seem to have any negative affects on the document itself. they simply don't show up. any way around this? thanks.
